IASTM
IASTM stands for Instrument Aided Soft Tissue Manipulation and may also be called ASTYM or Graston. Both AYSTM and Graston are specific types of IASTM, much like Ford is a type of an automobile.
IASTM is used extensively in the outpatient orthopaedic setting due to the results generated by the technique. These tools do not replace the hands of a skilled physical therapist but add a great option in the therapist’s manual therapy tool bag.
IASTM is indicated for many diagnoses and treated with physical therapy on a daily basis. It was originally designed to treat tendonitis, tendonosis, and tendonopathy. IASTM has proven to provide relief and increased functional outcome in other instances. We have used IASTM on sprains and strains, arthritic joints, chronically painful tissues, post-operative areas, myofascial dysfunction, and plantar fasciitis.
